Change is Inevitable

It has been a long time since I wrote anything on this blog. A lot has changed and now we are in a period of transition on the web. Eddy has quit supplying candles for sale on the web and I am in the process of figuring out what to do with the website.

I would like to find a source of quality candles that are made in the USA and the company will drop ship direct to our customers. I will not use candles made in China or other countries where we can not guarantee the quality of the product.

If I can’t find a source of candles to have on the site I would maybe sell the site which is built on the Ecommerce Templates shopping cart and is a very good shopping cart with great customer service and support.

Please contact me if you are a supplier of such products or know of a company I can work with for both of our benefit.

CANDLES AND GUNS

I hear a lot of talk about how candles have caused so many fires. But, in my minds eye, candles are like guns. Guns don’t kill, neither do candles start fires. It is people who shoot the gun and people who lite the candles. It is irresponsible people who start the fire, not the candle.

We all know to burn candles away from drafts, fans, or vents. How about putting them too close to curtains, places where they can be knocked off, places where children or animals can get to them.

Also, consider the surface you place them. I usually place on metal of some sort. Don’t forget to check the jar the candle is in. Is the container a cheap, thin glass?

But, more important than anything, are you the sort of person who forgets to put the candle out when going to bed or leaving? If that is the case, maybe you should purchase a melter and use melts for your fragrance. But then again, what do you do if the lights go out and no candle around.

So, just like guns, candles can be equally dangerous. But only due to the handler.

Candle users say they most frequently burn candles in the living room (42%), followed by the kitchen (18%) and the bedroom (13%).
Fragrance is by far the most important characteristic impacting candle purchases today, with three-fourths of candle buyers saying it is “extremely important” or “very important” in their selection of a candle.
Candle purchasers say they view candles as an appropriate gift for the holidays (76%), as a housewarming gift (74%), a hostess/dinner party gift (66%), a thank you (61%) and as adult birthday gifts (58%).

Candles – A Few Tips

Few things are as captivating as the soft light and glow of a candle. But there is an art to burning a candle properly and safely. You can generally tell if a candle is burning properly just by looking at it. You should see:

A calm, steady flame: This means that the candle’s burning process is in balance. The wick is efficiently pulling up the right amount of wax, which is then being “consumed” by the flame to produce water vapor and carbon dioxide.

No flickering or wisps of smoke: Constant flickering and smoking occur when the teardrop shape of the flame is disturbed. This allows small amounts of unburned carbon particles (soot) to escape from the flame as a visible wisp of smoke. If too much or too little air reaches the candle flame, it will disturb the flame’s teardrop shape, causing it to soot. To avoid this, always burn your candles in a well-ventilated room, away from drafts, vents or strong currents.

No flare ups: A wick that is too long can cause a candle flame to grow too long and flare. That’s why it is so important to trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each use. Also, always keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings or other debris that could catch fire from the flame.

If you like to group your candles, make sure they are at least 3 inches apart from each other when burning. Candles placed too closely together can create their own draft and cause the candles to flare.

I talked awhile back about having your olfactory receptors stimulated. Today in another blog I saw this – an excerpt from it.

Hi Bob and Eddy,

Just wanted to tell everyone out there how wonderful your candles are. The fragrances are just as good, if not better, than Yankee. I use a lot of candles, mostly tea lites, and I found Oregon Street Candles to be of superb quality. I just placed my third order in less than a year. I used to be a staunch Yankee Candle ’burner’….Not any more. Oregon Street is my candle of choice now. Try them folks, you won’t be disappointed……….

I finally got the new site this morning – Friday. Some people had it the day before I did, what is the deal that someone in Maryland can get it and put in an order a day before the webmaster can out here in Idaho?

http://www.oregonstreetcandleco.com will be unavailable for a while, some will get it soon and some will take a few hours but they say it can take 24 to 48 hours. I think that is unusual though, it has never taken long on others I have done. I pointed the domain to the new website about 3:30 pm today 4-29-09. When it comes up it will be the new site I have been working on for a few months.
All the same products and service as always.
